This weekend in Rochester, Minnesota USA Wrestling’s Last Chance Qualifier will be contested for Senior-level men’s freestyle wrestlers in each of the eight Senior weight classes who have yet to qualify will earn a spot in the 2017 Freestyle World Team Trials in Lincoln, Nebraska on June 10. A pair of wrestlers who both competed their collegiate careers in the state of Iowa are expected to be in attendance.
Hawkeye Wrestling Club’s Thomas Gilman figures to be one of the top competitors in the field at 57 kg. While it’s been three years since we’ve seen Gilman compete in freestyle, he was ranked #10 in USA Wrestling latest Senior-level rankings. Gilman’s attendance in the event was announced by his club’s Twitter account.
In addition to being a three-time All-American at Iowa, Gilman was a standout Junior freestyle wrestler, making the 2013 and 2014 Junior World Teams, earning World bronze on the latter team. During his college career Gilman earned victories over USA #3 and #4 ranked wrestlers, Nahshon Garrett and Nathan Tomasello respectively.
Also registered for the event at 57 kg are Clarion Goldfield-Dow standouts Josh and Justin Portillo who now train at the Jackrabbit Wrestling Club at South Dakota State University where they attend college.
Former UNI All-American Joey Lazor will also be competing at 61 kg as he looks to once again qualify for the World Team Trials. Lazor was a 2015 qualifier for the World Team Trials.
Four weight classes will be contested on Saturday (57 kg, 61 kg, 65 kg, 70 kg) and four weight classes will be contested on Sunday (74 kg, 86 kg, 97 kg, 125 kg). The event will be broadcast by Flowrestling.
