Seven freshmen from the Iowa State wrestling team will travel to Las Vegas this week to compete at the 2017 U.S. Open Wrestling Championships on Friday and Saturday. The event is hosted by the South Point Hotel and Convention Center and features United States wrestlers in the United World Wrestling 17-20 year-old age group. All seven wrestlers redshirted this past season for the Cyclones.
Competition begins Friday at 11 a.m. (CT). Consolation rounds begin Saturday at 11 a.m., and the semifinals and medal rounds begin Saturday at 2 p.m.
The top seven freestyle finishers in each weight class earn a berth at the 2017 UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials in Lincoln, Nebraska, on June 8-9. Of note, 66 kg wrestler Kanen Storr has already qualified for the Senior World Team Trials by being the highest finishing American at the Dave Schultz Memorial tournament earlier this winter.
FloWrestling will stream the 2017 Open Championships live at flowrestling.org.
