The UNI Panthers return home for the first time in two weeks as they take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Sunday afternoon. Doug Schwab’s squad is coming off a 20-12 win in Ames, it’s first such win over the Cyclones away from home in 13 years. EMU is surging a bit this season, going 5-4 overall, but they did just drop a dual with Northern Illinois 22-14 last night.
The dual will favor the Panthers pretty heavily. There are a couple of interesting matches though. At 125 EMU’s Noah Gonser recently defeated Missouri’s Barlow McGhee, the defending MAC Champion. The match would prove interesting in UNI’s regular at 125 pounds, Dylan Peters, was scheduled to be in the lineup, as it could have a potential seeding impact on the MAC tournament. However with Peters out it will be a stronger test for Jay Schwarm or Tanner Rohweder.
The other big match of the day will come at heavyweight, as JJ Everard takes on #13 Gage Hutchison from EMU. Hutchison has look good this year for the Eagles and he’s the only MAC 285 pounder in the NCAA Coaches Poll. Everard has a win this weekend over the 29th ranked Quean Smith from the poll, and another win over Hutchison might vault him into the poll and help qualify more than one heavyweight for the MAC.
The Panthers and Eagles last met a year ago, where the Eagles won the dual 22-14. It was the first win for Eastern Michigan over UNI in 8 tries. Hopefully Schwab and co. come out without any hangover from Friday night, because if EMU can get an upset or two and win both matches they’re favored in, the Panthers might find their first MAC loss of the season.
We’ll be in Cedar Falls on Sunday with live play by play going, so if you can’t make it out to the West Gym, or just want to follow along anyway, make sure to come back and check us out!
