This Thursday and Friday, some of the best wrestlers in the country will descend upon Fort Wayne, Indiana as they strive to help their school earn a National Dual Team Championship. Four of Iowa’s own will work towards not just earning a team title but also helping to solidify themselves in the national rankings.
The following Iowans will be competing:
Megan Black – McKendree University (Lebanon, IL) – 130 pounds
Anna Poyner – Missouri Valley College (Marshall, MO) – 136 pounds
Jasmine Bailey – McKendree University (Lebanon, IL) – 143 pounds
Rachel Watters – Oklahoma City University (Oklahoma City, OK) – 155 pounds.
Missouri Valley (Poyner) will face Life University of Marietta, GA in their opening round with a win placing them in the quarterfinals against top-seeded King University of Bristol, TN. Neither Life University nor King University has a ranked wrestler at 136 pounds so Poyner with have an opportunity to be a difference-maker individually while she works to help move her team forward.
Look for three of the four Iowa women to meet in the semifinals Friday morning if #2-seed, Oklahoma City University (Watters) meets #3-seed, McKendree University (Black and Bailey) in the semi-finals. The winner of that dual competition will move on to likely face top-seeded King University in the finals. This will be the first time Oklahoma City University (OCU) and McKendree have faced each other this season in dual competition.
OCU will take on Adrian College of Adrian, MI in round one of competition. If successful, they will face the winner of the Missouri Baptist University (St. Louis, MO) and University of Jamestown (Jamestown, ND) dual in the quarterfinals. #5-ranked (WCWA-Jan. 3) Watters will face Mara Eason of Adrian College. If an OCU-McKendree dual takes place in the semi-finals, Watters will face #7-ranked Alexandria Glaude.
McKendree will face Lindenwood University-Belleville of Belleville, IL in the first round of competition. With a win, Mckendree would move to the quarterfinals and face the winner of Emmanuel College (Franklin Springs, GA) and Wayland Baptist University (Plainview, TX). #2-ranked Black will face Erin Philips in the first round while Bailey will face either Claudia Gallegos or Faith Ghramm of Lindenwood-Belleville.
It is sure to be a great couple days of competition with matches starting at 3:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon and the finals matches starting at 2:00 p.m. Friday.
