Unfortunately for Iowa State wrestling fans they will not see the return of Patrick Downey next week at the Midlands (December 29-30), with the University confirming that he is not expected to travel with the team. Downey was a fifth place All-American at 197 pounds last season for the Cyclones, and is currently ranked #9 by Trackwrestling at 184 pounds.
This should mean that backup Carson Powell will continue to see time at the 184-pound spot for the Cyclones next week at the Midlands Championships. Several of the nation’s best are expected to be in attendance at 184 pounds including top ten wrestlers #2 TJ Dudley (Nebraska), #6 Myles Martin (Ohio State), #7 Nathan Jackson (Indiana), #8 Sammy Brooks (Iowa), and #10 Nic Gravina (Rutgers).
Downey has been out of the Iowa State lineup since the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open after suffering an injury in match in which he won by fall. The current timeline for Downey’s return is now targeted for the January dual against Arizona State, which is at home on Friday the 6th.
