Four Iowans make 2016 ASICS All-America Team

ASICS released their 31st annual All-America selections for the 2015-16 season. The teams were selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts, and it is the only national all-star team for which wrestlers enrolled in all four high-school grades are eligible.

This year the state of Iowa was able to place four prep wrestlers onto the list, which is the same amount of wrestlers that made the list in the previous year.

Making the honorable mention list from the state of Iowa was Kyle Biscoglia (106), Carter Happel (145), Carter Isley (285), and Gannon Gremmel (285).

Biscoglia finished off a sophomore season which led to the Waukee wrestler winning his first state title. On Monday IA Wrestle unveiled its first ever Fab 50 wrestlers rankings, and Biscoglia managed to come in at #16. Biscoglia was the only underclassmen to make the list from Iowa.

Happel makes the list for the first time after wrapping up a storied four year career for Lisbon. This past February Happel became Lisbon’s third four-time state champion, and leaves his school with a bevy of career and individual season records. He will continue his wrestling career at the University of Iowa.

Carter Isley finished off his career at Albia a two-time state champion and a three-time state finalist. A standout on the mat as well as the gridiron, Isley decided to continue his wrestling career with Northern Iowa.

Gannon Gremmel of Dubuque Hempstead was finally able to add state champion to his resume, despite having a presence on the national season for practically his entire high school career. Gremmel will continue his career at Iowa State.

In addition to the four Iowa natives that made the All-America team, 11 more wrestlers that will wrestle in the state of Iowa for their college careers made the team as well. Making the first team were a pair of recent Iowa commits Gavin Teasdale (113) and Spencer Lee (120). This is the third straight year Lee has made the All-America team, which means next year he could be the first ever to make the team four times.

The Hawkeyes also saw Justin Mejia (120), Kaleb Young (160), and Alex Marinelli (170) earn second team honors, and Jason Renteria (120) was listed as honorable mention.

The Cyclones saw their most recent 2016 commit Danny Vega (113) earn second team honors, and Sammy Colbray (195) made the third team. The Cyclones also got honorable mentions from Austin Gomez (132) and Kanen Storr (145).

Rudy Yates (132) was the only out of state wrestler committed to UNI to make the list, garnering third team honors.
