Last week, InterMat finished their updated class rankings with a total of three Iowa natives making the freshman and sophomore list. The list is available on InterMat for Platinum subscribers, and you can go back and view our write up on the 2017 junior class, and 2016 senior class.

It’s no surprise to see Alex Thomsen as the first name on the list for the 2018 list, as the Underwood sophomore checks in at #17. It’s almost getting difficult to list out Thomsen’s accomplishments over the last 12 months, but they include double Fargo All-American honors (runner-up in freestyle), Night of Conflict winner, fifth place at Super 32, Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic champion, ranked #1 at 126 pounds, and undefeated in IHSAA competition.

For the past few years Lisbon senior Carter Happel has been the talk of Iowa high school wrestling, being one of the more impressive talents to come through the ranks in several years. With Happel wrapping up his storied career in just under a month, expect Thomsen to receive even more chatter and hype.

The final sophomore ranked by InterMat is Glenwood standout Anthony Sherry, who received the #46 ranking. Sherry has always had a bit of tough luck in terms of wrestlers at his weight and this year he is the #2 ranked wrestler in 2A at 170 pounds behind junior standout Chase Shiltz (Creston). A year ago Sherry was in the same 3A bracket as future Virginia Tech wrestler Dayton Racer and Bryce Steiert, who is currently ranked in the top 20 at 157 pounds for Northern Iowa.

Aden Reeves
Aden Reeves is the only freshman ranked by InterMat

Somewhat notably missing from the sophomore list is Fort Dodge prep Brody Teske, who’s list of accomplishments seems to grow by the day as well. With the sophomore list only going to 50, it’s a good bet that Teske is most likely just sitting outside the rankings at the moment.

For freshman InterMat analysis Josh Lowe trims his list to just the top 25 wrestlers in the 2019 class. Making the list is another double Fargo All-American, and 2A’s #1 ranked 106 pound wrestler Aden Reeves of Albia who #17 among freshmen.
