The #2 Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the #16 Iowa State Cyclones 33-6 powered behind falls from Sam Brooks and Sam Stoll. This is the 12th straight victory for the Hawkeyes in the series; and now lead the series 63-16-2.

 

The dual started with the premiere matchup of the dual at 133 pounds; with #2 Cory Clark earning a 9-2 decision over #7 Earl Hall. The match was knotted at 2 going into the third period; but Clark was able to pull away with 2 sets of nearfall points on a suck-back and half-bar tilt.

At 141 pounds Dante Rodriguez defeated Logan Ryan by a 6-2 score. Rodriguez blasted through a re-shot double at the end of the 2nd period and scored on a takedown at the end of the match in a scramble to pull away. Ryan was in deep several times; but failed to finish his shots.

In another premiere match, #3 Brandon Sorensen was able to pull away from from #15 Gabe Moreno with an 11-3 decision. Sorenson added a set of back points in the 2nd period to take a 2-1, and poured on 3 more takedowns in the 3rd for the major.

Edwin Cooper outfought Renaldo Rodriguez-Spenecer for a 6-2 victory at 157 pounds. Renaldo hit a blast double early in the match to take a 2-1 lead; but Cooper was able to chip away at Rodriguez- Spencer. Cooper added an escape and stall point in the 2nd period; followed by adding 2 more stall points in the 3rd and a riding time point.

#11 Tanner Weatherman won the last match for the Cyclones as he pulled out a 10-9 victory over Patrick Rhoads. After a scoreless 1st period; Weatherman notched 2 takedowns and an escape in the 2nd to take a 5-2 lead heading into the 3rd. Weatherman notched 2 more takedowns to take a 9-5 lead; before Rhoads stormed back with 2 takedowns of his own including one at the buzzer.

At 174 #4 Alex Meyer dominated from start to finish over #16 Lelund Weatherspoon. Meyer stuffed a Weatherspoon shot early for a takedown,and preceded to ride out the 1st and 2nd period before adding a 2 3rd period takedowns for a 7-1 victory.

#12 Sam Brooks was dominant in earning a fall late in the 3rd period for the Hawkeyes. Brooks racked up multiple takedowns and stalling points to build a 22-8 lead late in the 3rd period. Brooks then pretended to cut Pestano loose before pouncing on him and whipping him over for the fall.

#4 Nathan Burak got things going for the Hawkeyes at 197 pounds in lieu to a 22-8 major decision over Duke Egli. Burak hit multpile attacks and 2nd period headlock to just miss the technical fall.

At Heavyweight, redshirt freshman Sam Stoll pinned Cyclone veteran Quean Smith. Stoll was able throw Smith to his back early; building a 6-0 lead and a 9-3 deficit after the 1st period. Stoll then hit another throw to pin Smith in the 2nd.

The match ended with a 12-3 decision with #2 Thomas Gilman defeating Kyle Larson. Gilman added 2 takedowns in the 1st and 3rd period in route to his victory. Gilman hit a variety of leg attacks and spin behinds en route to his victory.
