We started today with 20 Juniors in in search of a All-American finish at Fargo’s Greco-Roman tournament. In that group of 20 wrestlers, Iowa placed six of their wrestlers into the quarterfinals, which meant they needed only one win to reach All-American status. Two of those wrestlers punched their tickets to the semifinals, and Carter Isley was the lone Iowan to reach the finals.

Through the first round of consolation, Iowa lost nine of their wrestlers, which left only 11 still alive – the six quarterfinalist and five on the backside.

Leading things off in the quarterfinals was Cadet runner-up Drew West (113), who dropped his match 13-2 to Jordan Martinez of Colorado.

It was a battle of future Big Ten opponents at 138 when Aaron Meyer (138), took on Ben Brancale of Minnesota. Brencale was the victor in this matchup, as his 5-0 lead early in the second would be enough, despite Meyer picking up two takedowns later in the match. Also, oddly enough both of these wrestlers will be joining their brothers in the fall.

At 152 pounds, Iowa placed a trio into the quarterfinals, and returning Greco All-American Chase Straw delivered as Iowa’s first All-American with a 7-2 win over Anthony Wokasch of Arizona. The score was tied 2-2 in the second period when Straw was able to get a takedown and turn to take a 6-2 lead, which is all he would end up needing. In the other two 152 quarterfinals Colton Clingenpeel and Dan Kelly were each out matched against their highly ranked opponents. Clingenpeel lost to Mason Manville and Kelly lost to Hayden Hidlay, who are both top ten recruits in the 2016 class. Straw also fell to Hidlay in the semifinals by a score of 12-0.

Cater Isley took care of business at 285 to become the second Iowan to reach the semifinals, and with that the second Iowan to earn All-American honors on the day. Isley won 5-0 over Utah’s Damian Trujillo. Another solid 7-1 win in the semifinals set Isley up to be the wrestling for a national championship.

After falling in the quarterfinals, Drew West then had to face off against fellow Iowan Brenden Baker in the round of 12 to decide each’s All-American status. After Baker took a 2-0 lead, West hit a takedown an two turns to take the lead 6-2, West was able to hit a four point throw going out-of-bounds, and then another takedown to lock up a 12-2 technical fall.

Aaron Meyer followed suit at 138 winning 9-0 to become Iowa’s fourth All-American in the Juniors. As did both Kelly and Clingenpeel at 152, who won by fall and technical fall respectively.

Both Dale Hilleman (170) and Donovan Doyle each made it to the round of 12, but neither were able to break through to the podium.

On the consolation side, Colton Clingenpeel will be the lone Iowan wrestling for seventh at 152 pounds. At the same weigtht Iowans Dan Kelly and Chase Straw will face off for fifth. Both Drew West and Aaron Meyer made the third place match of their weights.
