Today, out at the Cadet National Duals, Team Iowa Greco-Roman stormed through their first two duals to reach the finals of their Pool after posting wins over both Pennsylvania (#2) and the New Jersey team. In the finals they ran into one of the toughest teams in the tournament, Illinois, which is a team that has been successful across all age groups at this tournament.

Iowa opened things up with a 59-20 win over Pennsylvania (#2) and they did so with three straight wins with Brady Kyner getting a forfeit, Nathan Lendt picking up a fall, and Nelson Brands posting a big 11-0 technical fall to give Iowa an early lead. Iowa won 10 of the next 14 matches to wrap up their big win and head to the semifinals of their pool.

In the next round they matched up with a tougher New Jersey team who actually won three of the opening four matches, with Brands being the lone winner to start things off. Ben Sarasin at 152 pounds then started a five match winning (all bonus) which was capped off by Garrett Kubovec’s fall at 195 pounds. New Jeresy was able to pick up a few more wins, but in the end Iowa upperweights did too much damage and Iowa advanced.

The finals the Cadet team ended up running into a brick wall as Illinois stopped all momentum Iowa had gained in the opening duals by winning every single match in the pool final to defeat Iowa 74-3.

Despite a loss to Team Illinois, New Jersey wound up taking third place in the bracket, and by rule Iowa secured second place and with that qualified for the Gold/Silver Pool. The Gold/Silver pool gaurentees that the team will finish in the top eight team finish at the tournament, so now we will see if this team can bounce back.

In a final non-Team Iowa note, 2017 Hawkeye commit Jason Renteria went 2-0 for Team Illinois Greco today, winning both his matches by technical fall.
