USA Wrestling has named seven wildcard selections to the 2015 World Team Trials and among that group are a pair of wrestlers with Iowa ties.
Leading the way is Angel Escobedo of the Cyclone Wrestling Club at 57 kg. Currently Escobedo is serving on the Iowa State coaching staff as well and he is the fourth wrestler who trains in the state of Iowa to qualify for the trials, joining Tony Ramos, Joe Colon, and Matt McDonough. Just two short years ago, Escobedo represented the United States at the 2013 World Championships where he finished one win shy of a medal taking home 5th place.
The other selection was at 70 kg where former UNI standout Moza Fay qualified. Fay took 6th at the U.S. Open earlier this month and was 2nd at the CISM World Military Championships last year. Fay currently trains in Colorado for the Army Wrestling Club.
When healthy, both are legitimate threats to win their weight class. Not only is Escobedo a former World Team member, but 2014 World Team member was able to just barely sneak by last year at the Trials. At 70 kg Fay is a former National Team member, and gave his 2014 World Team member Nick Marable a good match at the 2014 U.S. Open.
This was the final qualifying for the World Team Trials, which take place on June 13-14th in Madison, Wisconsin.
