Last night was all about a great charity and showcasing some great midwest talent and the border team controlled all of the action. The first wrestler to hit the mat with Iowa ties was Jacob Marnin from Southeast Polk. Marnin kept the match in control until the third period. Caleb Gossett tied the match up late in the third period and then Marnin won on a controversy call. You obviously know who’s side I am picking but in wrestling sometimes the greats just find a way to win.
Four time state champion Max Thomsen followed Marnins win with a dominating 12-2 major decision. Thomsen was the better wrestler in all positions and almost put Eveler on his back a few times. Thomsen’s workout partner as of late Fredy Stroker found himself in a battle with Seaman’s Luke Weiland. Stroker scored a very quick takedown in the first period and then gave up and escape last in the first. The second period was all Weiland. Weiland rode Stroker out in the second period with great legs and hips. Weiland chose down to start the third and escaped right away. Not a whole lot of action happened until :15 left in the match when Stroker hit a low single and score the final takedown of the match to win 4-2.
Chance Cooper from Timberland gave Iowa their only defeat against Cash Wilcke. The future Iowa Hawkeye was thrown to his back in the second period after Cooper hit a stand up and reached clear behind to dig in double under hooks. The crowd was waiting for a big throw the whole match because Cooper kept going for the under hooks in the first period and threw Wilcke a few times but it was out of bounds. This one connected and it was the difference maker in the match. Wilcke gave up a late takedown in the third to lose by decision 7-2.
In a battle of future in state rivals Jacob Holschlag defeated Colton DiBlasi 6-3. Holschlag will attend the University of Northern Iowa and DiBlasi will wrestle for Kevin Jackson and Iowa State University. Holschlag was the better wrestler on their feet and it paid off for Team Border. Full results of the Border Brawl are below.
