Yesterday ended up being a really great tournament full of some exciting matches, despite the fact that most of the Cyclone starters were held out. You can’t really blame a head coach for wanting to make sure that all of his starters are 100%. Luckily Iowa and Iowa State’s true freshmen showed up and put on a show.

Iowa State had the biggest day, as a pair of their freshmen made the finals. Nathan Boston (125) and Dante Rodriguez (141) both made it to the finals, but the way they got there was a little different. Rodriguez made his finals appearance in dominating fashion by pinning all four of his opponents on the way. In the finals he ran into Lavion Mayes, a top 15 wrestler who went 2-2 at NCAAs last March, and lost 8-7. After winning the Kaye Young open (with a lot of falls at the open too) and now a Harold Nichols Open, Cyclone fans may have some special brewing with Dante Rodriguez.

Nathan Boston opened his tournament with a couple big wins (TF and pin) and from there he ran into some stiffer competition. In the semifinals he ran into another true freshman Stevan Micic of Northwestern. It was a battle of last year’s #18 vs #31 recruit with Micic being so well respected he is expected to start for Northwestern. So when Boston pulled the upset 3-2, it sends a clear message. Nathan Boston is not only going to be good some day, he may already be one of the top wrestlers at his weight. He also lost a tough finals match to a top five ranked Alan Waters.

The final Cyclone to have a banner day was Marcus Harrington at 197 where he finished third place. He lost a tough semifinal match 2-1 to get bumped to the backside. It was in the consolation finals that Harrington made his mark as he pinned Lucas Sherridan of Indiana in the second period. Sherridan is the #19 ranked wrestler in the nation to see Harrington put on such a dominant match should probably send another message to ISU fans, this recruiting class from last year may have been underrated. It is only one open tournament, but these three Cyclone performances’ show that there could be some star potential in the making.

Iowa also had a trio of true freshmen who ended up placing top four and will go down as a great first college competition. First was Logan Ryan (141), who opened his tournament with a 13-2 major and was leading by over ten points before his second opponent had to injury default out. Ryan then ran into Mays (the same guy who took Rodriguez out in the finals) and lost 5-2 to him. On the backside he picked up a couple of tough wins including one over NAIA ranked Walker Marshall of Grand View. Ryan took home third place in his first tournament by defeating Sam Crane of Missouri.

Burke Paddock also had a good day wrestling up a weight from his expected weight class at 174. Paddock opened his tournament with a major, before getting knocked off by Bryce Gorman of Northern Illinois 5-3 in the second round. He then came back strong to win four straight matches to set up a rematch with Gorman in the consolation semifinals. Paddock not only avenged his loss, he beat Gorman by major decision 13-5. He picked up a fall in the finals to make it six straight wins to end his day.

Sam Stoll was the final placewinner for Iowa as he finished fourth in his 285 bracket. Stoll made his mark on the tournament when he defeated Illinois Brooks Black in the quarterfinals 3-1. Black was the former #1 overall heavyweight a few years ago, and it will go down as Stoll’s first big college win, in what is expected to be a long list. Stoll lost to top 20 wrestler Devon Mellon 8-3, and his other loss was to Malcolm Allen of Minnesota State in the third place match.

At the end of this weekend I think both Iowa and Iowa State fans should be really excited about their 2014 recruiting classes, and the other wrestlers the two schools had at the tournament also put in some great performances and this is shaping up to be a very exciting season for all of Iowa. Iowa will head to Luther weekend for the Luther Open to be a sort of wrestle-offs and Iowa State will head west to wrestle Boise State and Utah Valley.
