After an exciting weekend of Iowa Girls Freestyle Wrestling, Team Iowa filled 96 qualifying spots at the Iowa USA Freestyle State Tournament, which was held at Southeast Polk. (Full List of Qualifiers Below) It is sometimes a little confusing how the 16U and Jr Teams are formed to compete at Fargo. Let’s try to eliminate that confusion.
Each state is limited to four wrestlers per age group. This past weekend, those spots were filled by the wrestlers who competed at the Iowa Girls USA Freestyle State. This year, we saw some highly competitive matches, some familiar names, and some new faces make the podium in the top four spots to become part of Team Iowa in both 16U and the Junior Divisions.
On top of the four allotted spots each, there are Automatic Qualifiers. Iowa currently has 8 Automatic Qualifiers. (Full List of Automatic Qualifiers Below) To be an automatic qualifier, you could have placed top 8 at last year’s 16U or Junior National Tournament (Fargo), placed top 8 at this year’s U20, U17, or U15 National Tournament, which was held in Spokane, Washington, in April.
There is one last opportunity to become an automatic qualifier: wrestle at and place in the top 6 at a USA Wrestling Regional. For the Iowa girls, that tournament is the 2024 Northern Plains Regional Championship in Rochester, MN (5/10/2024 to 5/12/2024). This Regional takes place at the Rochester Technical Community College Regional Sports Center. Forty-seven Iowa girls will make the trip to Rochester to compete. There are 24 Girls competing in the 16U Division and 23 girls competing in the junior division. (Full List Below) 28 of these athletes have qualified for Fargo already, so that will give 19 Iowa girls the opportunity to claim a spot on the 2024 Fargo National Team for Iowa.
