Saturday at Independence high school Team Iowa hosted the USA Dream Team in an all-star event that promised fireworks with a talented Iowa senior class and a loaded USA squad. The night was bookended with UNI recruit victories over their all-star opponents.

The evening started out on the right note for Iowa as Jacob Hosclag picked up a win over a future instate rival Luke Entzel 1-0 at 170 pounds to give Iowa a 3-0 lead. This would begin a series of Iowa and USA alternating wins every weight all the way through the 120 pound match. Kollin Moore downed two-time state champion Evan Hansen by major decision, but Iowa retook the lead on a 3-2 win by future Hawkeye Cash Wilcke over Tyler Johnson at 195. One of the nations top 197 prospects Bobby Steveson had to put together a late rally to defeat state champion Steve Holloway 8-6 in the other 195 pound match.

Two-time state champion Ryan Parmely gave Iowa it’s first bonus win on the night with a 10-2 win over future Division II wrestler Jay Nino. USA responded with a 6-3 win over Mario Pena, who was a late addition to the Iowa roster after #3 Jake Marnin was scratched.

Back-to-back Iowa wins from Brennen Doebel and Jacob Schwarm gave Iowa a 16-10 over the Dream Team with seven matches reamining. It was there that USA rattled off five straight wins, including three by bonus to retake the lead 30-16 going into the final two matches.

In the last two matches Iowa wrestlers Bryce Steiert and Max Thomsen each picked up a pair of upsets to finish the dual 30-22. Thomsen earned a 6-4 win over the #1 ranked Michael Kemerer, a wrestler that had previously defeated Thomsen 9-4 and 6-4 this past year. Thomsen, along with his future teammates Steiert, Schwarm, and Holschlag pushed the UNI recruits to a perfect 4-0 on the night.
