Before tonight’s dual with Wartburg, Simpson College will be recognizing an alumni and current serviceman as part of a Military Appreciation night. Anyone with a military I.D. can get into the meet for free tonight.
Among those that they will recognize for their service is Colonel Gary Freese of the Iowa National Guard. Colonel Freese graduated from Simpson in 1982. As it is today, in 1982, the Iowa Conference was the premier Division III wrestling conference in the nation. While wrestling for the Simpson Redman, Colonel Freese was a four year letterwinner and was a top four placewinner at 118 pounds in the Iowa Conference Tournament all four years of his college career.
Colonel Freese enlisted in the Iowa National Guard during his Junior year at Simpson. During his thirty-four years of service, Colonel Freese has traveled the world doing his part to protect our nation. In 2006 and 2007, he was deployed to the Middle East where he was stationed in Kuwait and traveled in Iraq and Afghanistan. He just recently returned from an assignment in Kosovo where he collaborated with NATO countries to ensure the safe presence of United States military there.
Gary has been married to his college sweetheart, Peggy who, too, is a Simpson graduate for 34 years. They have two children, Amanda and Patrick.
