It has been a crazy week for the Iowa Hawkeye wrestling program with five class of 2015 recruits committing to wrestle for the Hawks. The first of these commits was from in state wrestler Cole Erickson of Mediapolis. Erickson holds a 121-10 career record and is a 3 time state place winner earning 4th as a freshman, 2nd as a sophomore, and 3rd as a junior. He also picked up a signature win last year over Minnesota recruit and nationally touted Larry Early of Illinois by a score of 8-1. We recently caught up with Cole to ask him about his decision.
What other schools were you considering?
I was considering the University of Minnesota, the University of Northern Iowa and talked to a few more schools but those are the main two. I was actually supposed to go on an official visit to the University of Minnesota this coming weekend but decided Iowa was a great fit and couldn’t pass it up.
What ultimately made you choose Iowa?
When it came to deciding it was all about finding the place that I felt was the best fit. Before talking to these coaches and others, I was looking for a great program, the best set of partners and most importantly a coaching staff that I knew believed in me and would push me to accomplish my goals. I feel like I found what I was looking for at Iowa.
What weight do you plan to wrestle your senior year of high school and what weight do you see yourself at in college?
I do not know what weight class I will wrestle this year, I will wait for the time to come to make that decision but my projected weight for college is 157.
Who are you most excited to wrestle with at Iowa, either coach or wrestler?
Being the University of Iowa and the amount of alumni, practice partners and coaches in the room I would have to say that I am not excited to wrestle just one person. I am excited for wrestle everyone in the room and because of their success.
What are your goals for your senior season and for your wrestling career going forward?
My one and only goal for my senior season is to have my hand raised in the finals at Wells Fargo. Then in my college career, which seems closer and closer, is to mainly become the best I can be.
