Team USA is currently having a training camp out in Arizona, and it was there that Matt McDonough won his wrestle off with Nahshon Garrett to claim the University 57 KG team spot. Flowrestling’s Christian Pyles is out in Arizona, and it was him that landed the great interview with Tony Ramos calling all lightweights to Iowa City, as it is easily the best place in the nation. If you need proof just look at the four World Team wrestlers the Hawkeye Wrestling Club currently boasts.
Pyles was also able to get some videos from Day 2 of the Training Camp at Arizona State University, and the first video that jumps out at you is probably watching Brent Metcalf do live goes with Fredy Stroker followed closely by the pair working on single leg finishes. The first thing that comes to mind is that Fredy is looking healthy (if you remember he needed knee surgery after he finished winning his state title last February). The second thing that comes to mind is Stroker working with Metcalf, can only help the chances of him committing to the University of Iowa. After all Ramos is calling all lightweight’s to Iowa City, not just guys who want to wrestle 125.
Also, just saying, I tweeted this out yesterday:
One of those favorites was Fredy Stroker…again just saying.
The final two videos of interest to Iowa fans would be Ramos and Metcalf doing “30 seconds of offense” and then Ramos and Metcalf working go behinds.
Also going on out West is the Junior freestyle and Greco-Roman duals are going on in Oklahoma. Quite a few prominent Iowa high school wrestlers participating in the action, including Cadet National Champions Jake Marnin and Drew West, and Iowa recruits Logan Ryan and Mitch Bowman. Today’s competition features Iowa’s Greco-Roman team, and Iowa was able to cruise to a 63-6 first round pool victory over Team Georgia Red.
In the next match Team Iowa faced off against Team Missouri and needed to pull of a Matt McDonough-esce comeback. Iowa started out down 13-5 after the first four matches (one of those wins was ISU recruit Colston DiBlasi 12-2 TF over Josh Davis), and needed big wins to come from the upperweights. Iowa bound Mitch Bowman (182) and Jake Marnin (HWT) helped lead the charge, as Iowa stormed back to tie the dual at 16-16 heading into the lightweights. After dropping matches at 100 and 106, Drew West (113) and Nolan Hellickson (120) both picked up falls to put Iowa back on top 31-24. Iowa ended in a close victory 35-34 and will be in the Pool B finals. If you are a Flo Pro subscriber you can watch the Junior Duals on their website.
Team Iowa will have both a Red and a Blue team for the freestyle duals. (Pulled from Trackwrestling.com)
