BRACKET A
132: #6 (2A) Steele Diercks (Assumption) vs #5 (1A) Jaxon Larson (Don Bosco) – Diercks is wrestling well right now, having won the Mount Vernon Invitational last weekend with a win over #4 Aaron Boone (Washington) in the finals. Barring a crazy weekend at BOW, we should see his stock rise having already taken out one of the wrestlers ahead of him in the rankings. A matchup with a top five wrestler in Class 1A is an excellent matchup for him.
106: #9 (2A) Adam Fish (Independence) vs #8 (2A) Coy Mehlert (Union LaPorte) – This was a high scoring match when these two met at the Cliff Keen Independence tournament a couple of weeks ago. The final was 11-7 in favor of Mehlert.
144: #3 (2A) Keegan Ellsworth (Union LaPorte) vs #4 (2A) Tyler Wieland (Independence) – This could be a battle between a pair of title contenders in Class 2A. Any time you can have two guys that are back-to-back in the rankings square off its a a match to watch.
144: #7 (1A) Boden White (Denver) vs #11 (2A) Darren Adams (Osage) – This is a top ten matchup, so its worth watching in this dual, but its worth noting that White took this match when the two met at Cliff Keen Independence 8-2 earlier this year.
BRACKET B
285: #1 (1A) Mason Knipp (Columbus Catholic) vs #5 (3A) Caden Wetherell (Waverly-Shell Rock) – A top five battle with a returning state champion facing Wetherell, who just missed out on the podium in Class 3A last season. Wetherell did have a strong performance at the Dan Gable Donnybrook taking fifth place at a tournament loaded with national talent.
113: #4 (1A) Nic Brase (Nashua-Plainfield) vs #7 (3A) Kendall Kurtz (Iowa City High) – Brase is ranked as a top five wrestler in Class 1A, and then Kurtz is ranked #7 in Class 3A. Brase was a state medalist at last year’s state tournament, while Kurtz missed out on the podium, however Kurtz is coming off a championship performance at Saydel last weekend.
132: #7 (3A) Hud Turner (Linn-Mar) vs #10 (3A) Isaac Lomas (Waterloo East) – A battle between two 3A guys with Linn-Mar freshman Turner taking on Lomas, who was a 2023 state qualifier.
BRACKET C
126: #2 (3A) TJ Koester (Bettendorf) vs #6 (2A) Carter Cajthaml (Charles City) – At this point we know Koester is one of the top names in his grade and all of Iowa. He won state as a freshman, so his pedigree is well established. His opponent will be Cajthaml who is a very promising freshman that is only just starting to work his way up the rankings.
BRACKET D
113: #5 (1A) Wes Sadler (Lisbon) vs #11 (3A) Isaac Wignall (Ankeny) – A little bit to Cajthaml, Wignall is a freshman so he is working his way into the rankings which is why he sits down at #11. He is also probably better suited to 106, but the Hawks currently have top three ranked Ben Walsh manning that spot in their lineup. Sadler is a top five guy and returning state medalist for the Lions.
