Four-time state medalist, Zachary Thompson from Perry has committed to wrestle in Division III at Loras College.

“The past couple of years Loras has been improving and I feel that I can be a part of something special.” Thompson said on his decision.

Loras set a program record for single-season dual winning percentage (.944) and qualified four for the national championships with Guy Patron Jr. bringing home runner-up honors.

Loras College has a great pipeline into Perry, as current assistant Trevor Kittleson served as the Perry head coach from 2011-16.

“Obviously the coaches are great. I’ve know Kittleson since I was in seventh grade. I’m very grateful for the coaches to give me this opportunity.”

Thompson went sixth, sixth, third and fourth at the state tournament and finished his career with 174 wins and top of Perry’s record books.

The list includes 484 career takedowns (2018), 40 single-season near falls (3 pts), 13 single-season tech falls (2018), 29 career TF (2018), 103 career escapes, 520 single-season match points (2017) and 1,523 career match points according to the Perry Chief.

Thompson plans to bulk up to fill into 133lbs but as a 120 pounder this year, 125 won’t be out of the question.

Rounding out the DuHawk’s 2018 class is fellow Iowa state medalists Tad Griffith (Des Moines Lincoln), 285lb runner-up Dylan Olson (Dubuque Hempstead), Brock Parker (Waukee) and Braydon Nunemaker (East Buchanan). Loras also landed Colorado state champion Christian Fulks from Adams City.

Thompson was also considering Wartburg and Grand View.
