It might have gotten lost in all of the coverage of the Grapple on the Gridiron, but the annual Luther College Open was held yesterday in Decorah, Iowa. It comes to no surprise that the Knights of Wartburg sent a strong team to the tournament, picking up six finalist and three champions in the Elite division.
Some results that stand out: Arnulfo Olea brings home the 125 pound title for Wartburg in his first open since joining the team as a Junior College Transfer. We highlighted in our preview that Olea would be a wrestler you wouldn’t want to miss this season.
Drew Van Anrooy (Luther) and Trevor Engle (Cornell) both ended up forfeiting out of their brackets at 141 and 149 respectively. Both wrestlers are considered top contenders for this March’s NCAA championships in Cedar Rapids.
Coe’s Farai Sewera continues to smash everyone in his way. The returning 165 NCAA champion had a pair of falls, a technical fall, and two major decisions on the day.
