I know the session just ended, but with Women’s Junior freestyle and Men’s Greco World Team Trials going on at the same time, the competition is packed. Finals and the medal round will be starting at 2:00 PM (full schedule here).
Iowa started the round with 10 wrestlers alive, with two Iowans, Brenden Baker (113) and Jake Marnin (285) the only ones who remain alive for a championship. Both Baker and Marnin made to their semifinals, guaranteeing them 6th place. Baker lost his match after he was leading 7-2. He let his opponent slowly chip away at his lead before getting hit with a big move and losing 16-9. Marnin had a similar outcome, as he ran into Greco star Sam Stoll and lost 8-1. Baker will be going for 5th this afternoon.
The surprise of the day came from Chase Straw (152) when he pinned ISU commit and nationally ranked Colston DiBlasi, after trailing most of the first period 2-0. He followed that match against another nationally ranked opponent in Dayton Racer (formerly of Apple Valley, now in Missouri) and won the nail biter 4-2. The back-to-back ranked victories earned the Independence wrestler his All-America status. He dropped his next match, and will be wrestling for 7th this afternoon. Straw brought the total to three Iowa Junior All-Americans.
Iowa lost quite a few of their wrestlers this round, including Alex Aguirre (100) who fell one round short of AA status. Aaron Meyer (145), Josh Davis (152), Donovan Doyle and Kyle Fank (195), and Tanner Heeren (285) lost well before they were in contention to make the stand. Bowman (182) also fell short of the stand, dropping his final match 11-9 to fall just one match short.
We mentioned DiBlasi above, but other commits Burke Paddock (160) continued his dominance as he made his way to the finals with ease. Ronaldo Rodriguez-Spencer (ISU – 145) proved to have little issue with his competition as well and he will also wrestle for first. Finally the heavyweights Sam Stoll (Iowa) and Adarios Jones (UNI) both made the semifinals in their brackets as well. Stoll had to face Iowa’s Jake Marnin on his side. After a 8-1 win over Marnin, Stoll set up a showdown between future college interstate rivals as he will face UNI bound Jones today.
