Iowa’s 16U team got off to a strong start by earning a fourth place finish in Greco-Roman, yesterday in Spokane, Washington. All of Iowa’s losses came to teams that placed directly ahead of them in the competition. Yesterday, the dropped their Pool final to Minnesota Blue, who went on to win the tournament by defeating Illinois. In the final Gold/Silver pool Iowa dropped their opening dual to Illinois, before rallying to beat both Pennsylvania and Missouri to make the third place bout. There the Georgia team came through by the score of 43-31.
As far as Iowa’s individual performances among the standouts for Team Iowa was Solon native Hayden Taylor, who went 4-0 split between 132 and 138 pounds. Also competing in half the team’s matches and maintaining a perfect record was Underwood’s Stevie Ray Barnes, who finished 4-0 at 113 pounds. One wrestler came up one win shy of owning a perfect record in Greco-Roman and that was Union’s Adam Ahrendsen who was 6-1 at 160 pounds.
Last year’s team set a high bar by winning top eight finishes in both Greco-Roman and freestyle, but so far this 16U squad is on their way to outpacing their performance. A year ago Iowa’s 16U team placed eighth in Greco and third in freestyle.
